A Recipe to Create Your Purpose-Filled L.I.F.E

Do you feel like you are merely existing - operating on auto-pilot and going through life feeling overwhelmed, stressed, stuck or directionless? You may have thoughts of breaking free, but you just can’t seem to figure out what needs to change so you can live with more joy. Our routines can suck the life out of us – especially if you are in phase of life where you are serving as CEO of your family and trying to work or build your career. And if you’re not careful others will start to put extra responsibilities on your schedule – taking away your already very limited, valuable time.

Even if you’re not super busy it’s still possible to feel like you are merely just going through the motions. Maybe you have recently transitioned to a new phase of life – a recent graduation, a change in family structure, or perhaps you started a new position or changed careers.

Whatever the case, you are not alone, and it’s not uncommon to feel directionless! We all go through periods of change, and it is completely natural to have feelings of uncertainty, doubt, malaise, and even fear.  However, when these feelings grab hold it’s time to rise up, gather your strength, face your fears and carry on. Your track record of getting through tough days is 100%, and it is possible to live with more joy and clarity of vision despite the shifting tides.

We call this experience of living a full, meaningful life The Purpose-Filled L.I.F.E

The 4 Main Areas are:

  • L – Love
  • I – Influence
  • F – Feel Good
  • E – Elevate

Love – We start with love because we all need to love and be loved. When we reach the end of our lives we likely won’t care about how successful we were, how much money we made, or if we received notoriety or fame. Our connections and relationships with others will be what matters most.

With that said, many times we forget to prioritize the people in our lives that we love. We can get so obsessed with other things that we forget how beautiful it is to simply share and experience love. Or we get so caught up in all of our big-girl responsibilities we only give our tired, worn out, lackluster energy to those we love because they are often last in line. We get away with it because they love us (and we love them).  But, think about how much joy you get when you give yourself completely to these people.  It doesn’t have to happen every minute of every day, but we’d like to suggest that to truly live a Purpose-Filled L.I.F.E you must prioritize your connections and relationships over everything else.

Action Time – Take stock on where you are today in regards to your connections and relationships. Are you fully showing up for those that matter most to you? In what ways would you like to do a better job of loving those around you? Write down 3 things that you are grateful for in regards to your close relationships and 3 things you would like to change or do better.  

There is no limit to how you define your connections and relationships – you can reference your family, your kids, your colleagues, people you serve – perhaps through volunteer opportunities, your neighbors, your friends, or anyone else that you love or care about.

Influence – The second area we address is your influence in the world. This is the category where you will assess your work, career, creativity and finances.

We all want to make a difference in the world – even if in just a small way. We want to know that our time here mattered and that we took the best of what we’ve been given and did something with it. Whether you know it or not you have influenced someone or something in the world. You possess a unique set of skills, thoughts and experiences that no other person in the world has had or ever will have. You friend, are a dynamic, amazing soul and you have a lot to give. Ask yourself: ”who and how am I influencing the world around me?”

 As you ponder this category think about how   things are going in your work and career. Is   your  work meaningful, are you progressing in your career, are you where you want to be? Are you earning the amount of money you want/need to earn? Do you enjoy work or does your work create a sense of dread?

If you are not working outside the home think about the influence you have over the people you serve on a daily basis. Are you leading your family in the heart-centered way you desire? Are you serving your community in ways that are impactful and meaningful? What is missing in your life by way of doing meaningful work in the world?

Action Time - Take stock on where you are today in regards to your influence in the world. In what ways do you feel like you are a shining example to others? In what ways can you do a better job of sharing your unique gifts and talents with the world? Write down 3 things you are doing well, and 3 things you would like to change in regards to your influence.

Feel Good – The next category is all about how can you feel your best so you can show up for the roles that matter most to you. You have probably heard this before, but you simply cannot serve from an empty vessel and you absolutely must prioritize your own health, wellness and vitality in order to live your best life.

When we talk about self-care we are referencing those activities, exercises, healthy foods and sleep/rest practices you need so you can operate at your highest version of yourself. We all know that regular exercise and eating good, clean healthy foods is important, but where are you on the scale of actually making it happen?

This category can be hard to take a deep dive on because oftentimes our own self-care competes with our other important roles and we find ourselves saying no to our own health and wellness so we can be available for something else. It’s not that one is more important than the other – it’s just that our kids’ schedules, the demands of our jobs, social media distractions, Netflix binges, too many glasses of wine (the list goes on) often speak louder and crowd out our quest for healthy living.

Maybe you don’t yet know what you should be doing by way of exercise and healthy nutrition. Maybe you feel like you simply cannot add one more thing to your “to do” list. Or maybe you just haven’t made the connection between how ultimately important it is to be the healthiest version of yourself.

What we know after decades in the health and fitness industry is this: when you live a fit and healthy lifestyle you have the energy, vitality and strength to fulfill all your other roles . . . and this is the # 1 reason our health is so important. And, here is the key: you must work it in that order - prioritize self-care so YOU can feel good and then have what it takes to care for others. It’s kind of like the old “put your oxygen mask on first” narrative we hear on airplanes.

Action Time – Today is a no judgment day – simply take stock on where you are on the spectrum of health and wellness. What is going well? What needs to change? Let’s not focus on the how just yet. Let’s just get super clear on WHAT is happening now. Write down 3 areas you are doing well in regards to your vitality, health and wellness and 3 things you would like to change.

Elevate – By nature we are curious beings, we seek knowledge and experience, we are researchers yearning to discover new things, ideas, and ways of thinking. To continue to evolve, you must always strive to quench this thirst. To become the best version of yourself, you must never stop learning. 

So to ELEVATE is to continue climbing toward the extraordinary - because to live a Purpose-Filled L.I.F.E you want to do more than just merely survive. You want to thrive and be a high performing woman, a fully alive woman, a woman who lives with joy and leads a life worth telling a story about. And just like everything else in life – this level of growth and elevation does not happen unless you make it happen. You must develop a practice of going inward, truly listening to your heart and choosing your own path. To ELEVATE you must choose to adopt a growth mindset and become intentional about progressing in your personal development, your connectedness to your soul, your unique journey, and your purpose. 

Action Time - Take some time to assess where you are on the elevation spectrum. Do you have a mindful practice where you spend time each day listening to your inner voice? Do you routinely stop to notice the beauty around you and enjoy the journey your life is taking? Are you cultivating a heart of gratitude? Do you make time to invest in your own personal development either through self-study or with a coach? The point is not what you are doing - the point is do you value your own personal growth to make it a priority in your life? Write down 3 areas you feel you are already ELEVATING to a higher level and 3 areas you would like to change.
